The Italian Military Navy and STA

The Italian Military Navy has always participated in the Tall Ships’ activities since the first race in 1956, when “Artica II”, at the time brand new, won in its class. In the following years the ships of SVMM (Sport Velico Marina Militare) were represented by “Corsaro II” that in 1962 won the regatta from Torbay to Rotterdam and, in 1964, the one from Lisbon to Bermuda.; by “Stella Polare”, that in 1970 won the regatta from Plymouth to Tenerife, the success was repeated in the regatta from La Coruna to Portsmouth in 1974 and again, in 1976, in Bermuda.
Nave “Amerigo Vespucci”, even if racing only in 1992 and 2000, and participating to the meeting of vessels in the ports of the North Sea, earning an exceptional admiration everywhere, is an extraordinary testimonial of Italy in the word. In 1996 and 2000, the Military Navy participated in force to these events. Apart from Nave “Amerigo Vespucci” and Nave “Palinuro”, other ships of SVMM, armed by trainees, took part: Corsaro II, Caroly, Capricia, Sagittario;  and then: Artica II, Gemini, Albatros and Dragone. In total, eight hundred men have been engaged in training cruises.
Orsa maggiore, admiral ship of SVMM fleet, in 1995, at her first race, arrived first in real time at Jakarta in Indonesia (Sail Indonesia), and in 1997, after taking part to Sail Osaka and relative ISTA races, did more than 44 miles by sailing the world periplus. In 1998 Orsa Maggiore took part to ISTA races in the Atlantic with great results (first in real time and in corrected time of her class). Then she went to Japan for the celebration events for the link between Italy and Japan.
